Concrete has been used as a building material for centuries. From early ancient structures, such as the Pantheon and Coliseum, to modern day masterpieces concrete is the material of choice for durable, affordable, and versatile construction. While the world is filled with impressive concrete structures, some of the world’s most stunning structures can be found right here in the United States. Here are five that we think are pinnacles of modern concrete construction.
Grand Coulee Dam, Washington State Boasting over 47 billion pounds of concrete, the Grand Coulee Dam is one of the largest concrete structures in the world. With that much concrete, you could build a highway from Seattle to Miami! The Pentagon, Washington DC Much of the concrete filler for the Pentagon project was dredged from the grounds of the project and the Potomac River. In the end, the project used over one billion pounds of concrete. The Venetian Hotel, Las Vegas In 1999, the Venetian Hotel project captured the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous concrete pour at 21,000 cubic yards. Wilshire Grand, Los Angeles In February 2014, The Conco Companies conquered the Venetian Hotel’s continuous concrete pour world record of 21,000 cubic yards by 200 cubic yards on the Wilshire Grand project in Los Angeles. The 82 million pounds of concrete and was poured in just 18½ hours. Trump Tower International Hotel and Tower, Chicago The Trump Tower in Chicago, IL, completed in 2009, is the world’s tallest concrete-reinforced building. Weighing in at an impressive 720 million pounds of concrete, case studies have been dedicated to this incredible architectural feat. At The Conco Companies, we are one of the leading concrete contractors in the Western U.S. and offer a wide range of quality services and products. Our experience includes providing services for commercial, educational, parking and other construction development as well as public works projects. We serve California, Washington State, Oregon, Colorado and Nevada. As a reminder, the project consists of a 528,000 sqft office space, hotel, and spa scheduled to be completed by April 2017. The building boasts a number of green building features and hopes to seek LEED Gold certification. The initial concrete mat foundation pour, completed in June 2015, required 500 truckloads of concrete alone.
The project is progressing beautifully. As of August 2016, the concrete core stood at its final height (48 stories) and the focus shifted to completing the remaining concrete pours for the structural decks and garages. Remaining concrete pours for the month of August commenced at a pace of 2 per week until Level 28 was reached. Structural steel was installed in August and roof steel was installed shortly after, bringing an end to the steel erection process. The project really ramped up in September when concrete pours were increased from 2 per week to 3 per week with the goal of completing all concrete decks up to level 4. This pace continued through October until level 45 concrete cement decks had been successfully poured. Parts of the garage, which have been poured, are being polished with final paint and signage. The next major project milestones include the rooftop mechanical and structural assemblies, podium construction for levels 1 through 5, mid and high-rise elevators, and the removal of cranes as the project moves onward. Conco is a leading supplier of concrete services for the Western U.S. and we got our start in the Bay Area in 1959 by offering clients the best value on a wide range of concrete services and products. Since that time, we have taken a leading role as one of the top concrete contractors in the region. Our offices serve California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Nevada. If you want an opportunity to see our highly-efficient Conco crews at their best, take a look at our time-lapse video of the 4,620 cubic yard mat pour for the 970 Denny Way project. The mixed-use redevelopment project in Seattle, Washington is being developed by the Holland Partner Group, with Holland Construction acting as the general contractor.
The 970 Denny Way mat pour took place on July 23rd and was done over approximately 15 hours. Our crew started at 2:00 am and finished around 5:00 pm. The job took 4,620 cubic yards of concrete to form the 15,300 square foot mat foundation for the new 40-story apartment/retail building. In addition to the concrete, the foundation also used 1.3 million pounds of rebar. All of the ready mixed concrete was supplied by CalPortland. Our video adeptly illustrates the kind of teamwork required to get such a large job done in a relatively short amount of time. Now that the mat pour is complete, construction on the South Lake Union neighborhood building has begun in earnest. Once it is finished, the building will feature 468 apartment units in various configurations, 15,580 square feet of retail space, and four levels of sub-grade parking. The core of the building will be constructed using 386 steel fiber-reinforced concrete coupling beams. Our website and YouTube also have a selection of other mat pours that we have completed over the last several years. One of our time-lapse videos is for an impressive 12,000 cubic yard mat pour for a new skyscraper under construction in the heart of the financial district of San Francisco. This massive pour was completed over the course of 16 hours. Along with the help of 7 concrete boom pumps, the project went off without an accident or any problems despite the challenging logistics and setting. The Conco Companies provide concrete services for the flourishing Seattle and Bellevue construction markets. Some of these projects have included “green” sustainable features, mixed-used residential/retail construction, and unique architectural features.
We have worked on several projects in the fast-growing Denny Triangle and South Lake Union areas in Seattle, WA. If you are unfamiliar with the Denny Triangle area, it is the site of Amazon’s headquarters and where two new Amazon office towers were recently finished with another scheduled for completion by the end of the decade. The company is also constructing three intersecting biospheres at the site that will offer 65,000 square feet of green space for employees to work and socialize in a natural park-like setting. The largest of the spheres is 95-feet tall, which is about the height of an eight-story building and 130 feet in diameter. One of the Denny Triangle projects we are involved with is the Kinects Tower. It included constructing four levels of below grade and five levels of above grade parking for a total of 316 parking stalls. We also did a 6,000 cubic yard concrete pour for the 145’x120’x9′ and just over 500,000 sq. ft. size PT slab that was reinforced with 850,000 lbs. of rebar. The 41-story tower is a unique, wedge-shaped building that gets progressively larger on each floor with an enclosed, four-season pool on the roof. Due to the sustainable features of the apartment building, it has already been awarded LEED Silver Certification. Units will be ready for residents in July 2017. Another project we recently finished in Bellevue, WA was the Main Street Gateway complex. Awarded the turn-key structural concrete package, we provided all of the pumping, place and finish, shotcrete, and formwork for the mixed-use project. We also supplied the reinforcement that was installed by RPM. The project includes an underground parking lot for about 600 vehicles and also several electric vehicle charging stalls. Conco is one of the leading suppliers of concrete services for the Western U.S. We got our start in 1959 in the Bay Area by offering clients the best value on a broad range of concrete services and products. Since that time, we have taken a leading role as top concrete contractors in the region. We have four regional offices serving California, Oregon, Nevada, Colorado and Washington. The Conco Companies have a lot of experience in providing concrete services for the healthcare field. One such project is the new Veteran Administration Mental Health and Research facility under construction in Seattle. For this project, we are providing a wide range of concrete services including pumping, formwork, place and finish and shotcrete. In addition we will supply the reinforcement for the 203,000 square-foot building.
Another hospital project we are working on is the parking structure for the new Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, CA. The project involves the construction of 2 levels below grade, 1 level at grade and 2 levels above grade and will total approximately 397,359 square feet. The project requires 4.2 million pounds of reinforcing steel as well as 17,000 cubic yards of concrete and 1,200 cubic yards of shotcrete. While we are not directly involved in the expansion of the Stanford Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH), we applaud the sentiments of the pumping company that is using a new Putzmeister America 56Z-meter concrete pump with a pink boom. JJ Albanese had Putzmeister paint the boom pink at the factory in honor of breast cancer awareness. A company spokesman explains that they have many employees who have either themselves or have had a loved one suffer from breast cancer. The LPCH expansion is expected to be complete in 2017 and will add 521,000 square feet to the approximately 300,000-square-foot existing hospital. The new space will accommodate 150 patient rooms, office space and a healing garden and green space. In addition there will be state-of-the-art operating suites, family-friendly amenities and flexible floor space to address new technologies and streamline services. The Conco Companies are the foremost supplier of concrete services for the Western U.S. We have built a reputation on superior concrete formwork, reinforcing, place and finish, shotcrete and other ancillary services that benefit from our vast experience. Our four regional offices serve California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada. The Conco Companies have been in business for decades, and as such, have had the opportunity to provide concrete services on a broad range of commercial, educational, healthcare and public works projects as well as parking structures. One very large and exciting project we are proud to be a part of is the Wilshire Grand Center, which when complete, will become the tallest building in the U.S. west of the Mississippi.
The 73-story 1,100 foot skyscraper is located in Downtown Los Angeles and is right in the middle of a seismic hot zone with a fault less than a ½ mile away that has an estimated capacity for a 6.4 magnitude earthquake. This means that even before construction began several steps had to be taken to ensure it was ready in the event of an earthquake. Much of the early work came in the form of the architectural and engineering design. The Los Angeles-based architectural firm, A.C. Martin Partners, who prepared the current design and is overseeing the project designed the building with a garage and plaza that consists of five levels of 13-inch thick concrete floors. This will work to “transfer lateral loads such as seismic activity or Santa Ana winds to the walls or frames” of the building. Another example of how the skyscraper was designed to protect it from seismic shaking is the construction of its core that consists of four-foot thick walls and contains steel-plate box columns filled with concrete. The core will hold the building’s elevators and staircases. Furthermore, an additional 10 columns are linked to the core. These act as “structural shock absorbers to absorb the energy that an earthquake might produce.” Before Conco’s historic, record setting continuous mat pour even took place in February 2014, the skyscraper’s design had been put through some of the most advanced and sophisticated earthquake modeling available. After a series of numerous tests and studying damage from past earthquakes in Southern California, the engineers refined the size and depth of the foundation. In addition they added devices called buckling-restrained braces. These long steel bars are encased in steel boxes and filled with grout to allow the bars to compress or stretch when the building moves. Sources:la.curbed.com/archives/2014/02/how_the_wilshire_grand_will_stay_upright_in_a_major_earthquake.php At The Conco Companies, we have extensive experience working on projects in commercial, healthcare, industrial, and parking as well as public works. In the industry since 1959, we also provide concrete services for projects at educational institutions. While some of these projects may not be our largest or most renowned, we are proud of our continued commitment to provide exemplary concrete services to enhance and benefit our communities.
One of the projects we undertook several years ago was for the new state-of-the-art University of California, Berkeley - Davis Hall that houses their science and research facilities. The project’s contractor was Hathaway-Dinwiddie, the architect was the Smith Group, Inc., and the engineer was Forell/Elsesser Engineers. The expanded building now includes the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department as well as the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS). Approximately 185,000 sq. ft. large, the new facility cost $18 million to construct. Another example of Conco’s commitment to educational projects is the new Riverside Continuation High School. The prior structure had been in a deteriorated state when the decision was made to totally replace the structure with a new 34,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility. The contractor on the project was Broward Builders, Inc. and the architect was California Design West. Conco provided concrete services for the project, which was on an extremely tight timeline due to the need to be done for the 2012 school year. Completed in slightly less than a year from groundbreaking, the construction team worked diligently to stay on budget and meet deadlines. A recent trend in educational projects is to construct buildings as “green” as possible and to utilize sustainable practices that will save energy (and money) in future operational costs. One such project we were a part of was the award winning 2,670-bed Poly Canyon Village at Cal Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The large project was built on a 30 acre site and included nine residential buildings, two parking structures with 1,926 spaces, retail stores, a swimming pool, study rooms, and administrative student support services. The Conco Companies are a leading supplier of concrete services for the Western United States. We have built a reputation on superior concrete formwork, reinforcing, place and finish, shotcrete and other ancillary services that benefit from our vast experience. We have four regional offices to serve Southern and Northern California, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. Another excellent chance to watch The Conco Companies in action is the YouTube video for the 815 Pine Full Deck Cycle Time Lapse mat pour as well as the earlier 815 Pine Mat Foundation Placement video. The Seattle, Washington project is another case where Conco was asked to accelerate the construction process in order to get the project to market more quickly.
Owned by the Holland Partner Group, the 40-story residential tower is located in downtown Seattle. One of the job’s top priorities was to complete the project on time regardless of the area’s changing weather conditions. To ensure we were successful, Conco was asked to construct a complete floor every week. Our 815 Pine Full Deck Cycle Time Lapse video shows our progress as it goes through pour day for Level 34 through Level 35 pour day. In order to complete the task, our five day requirements involved:
The 815 Pine Mat Foundation Placement video shows pour day as it got underway on January 26, 2013 around 2:30 a.m. For the approximately 4,600 cubic yard pour, the finishers were off the slab around 9:00 PM (the video time is accurate). We encourage you to take a look at the other Conco YouTube videos as well as learning more about the full range of projects we have been a part of throughout our many decades in the industry. The Conco Companies are a leading supplier of concrete services for the Western U.S. and got our start in the Bay Area in 1959 by offering clients the best value on a wide range of concrete services and products. Since that time, we have taken a leading role as one of the top concrete contractors in the region. Our offices serve California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Nevada. During our almost 60 years in the business, The Conco Companies have had to come up with creative solutions to effectively and efficiently solve problems to keep our projects on time and budget. Many times one of the biggest problems we face is simply a lack of space to stockpile equipment and materials. This requires us to plan carefully in order to make the best use of the available space.
One case where it was vital to maximize our limited space in order to get a project done in an extremely tight time-frame was during the building of 1 South Market, a high-rise residential tower under construction in downtown San Jose. Our task involved the need to backfill 2,900 tons of crushed rock in the space of just three 8-hour days. Knowing that any delays on our part would impact other job tasks and taking into account the already congested worksite, Conco brought in our Direct Feed trailer to tackle the job. In order to get a good look at the process and to see our equipment in action, watch our YouTube videos, Direct Feed Trailer Gets High Productivity in Tight Space Part 1 and Part 2. Our solution was to bring in a Direct Feed trailer that allowed a Super Dump, Transfer, End Dump or 10-Wheeler to unload its contents directly into the hopper attached to the trailer. The material was then fed from the hopper onto one of Conco’s Telebelts. From there, the Telebelt placed the material directly where it needed to be placed. By employing this system, we eliminated the need to stockpile material on a limited space jobsite along with the need to handle it twice via a loader or bobcat. Since the material was discharged directly into the back of a truck, it meant we accomplished the task not only quicker but it required less labor than if we had used a loader to move the material. Another advantage The Conco Companies bring to our projects is as the proud owner of a trucking company, we can guarantee we will have the equipment we need to successfully get the job done. Conco’s Reliable Trucking Company provided the Super Dumps we used for the job. The Conco Companies are the foremost supplier of concrete services for the Western U.S. We have built a reputation on superior concrete formwork, reinforcing, place and finish, shotcrete and other ancillary services that benefit from our vast experience.
