Western red cedar is an excellent choice for many projects, but the grade of the lumber you use will determine how well it fits your needs. To help you make the best lumber choice, The Lumber Baron would like to present you with a description of the various grades of western red cedar we carry, and how each grade should be applied for maximum performance and appearance.
Select Tight Knot
Also referred to as “STK” or “Green,” this is grade is great for general purpose applications. STK contains some knots, but is relatively free of blemishes and imperfections. Knots are small and tight, and well-distributed across the entire piece of lumber. Whether you are siding the home, installing a ceiling, or paneling your den, this grade is suitable for interior and exterior usage
Super Select Heart
Sometimes called “Super,” or even “Double Green,” this medium grade of cedar has very few knots, and the ones it contains are limited to a size of no more than 1-½ inches in size. Additionally, you will not find more than 2 such knots on a piece of lumber measuring 6 inches wide by 14 feet long. Longer pieces may contain more knots, but it will still follow the same proportionate distribution. Thicker pieces of lumber may contain slightly more knots, so long as they conform to the size requirements of the grade specifications. The small number of imperfections permitted in Double Green cedar make it an excellent choice for stained or unpainted applications, useful for furniture, wrapping beams, trim, and high visibility applications.
Clear All Heart
This superior quality cut is known in the business as “CAH,” “Old Growth Vertical Grain (OGVG),” or “Yellow.” In the lumber yard, we also know it as “#2 Clear and Better,” because it is almost entirely free of knots and blemishes. The few knots which may occur on a piece of lumber are sound, making this grade perfect for exterior and high traffic applications such as siding, decking, and horizontal slat fencing.
