Denver is one of the fastest growing cities in the west and has been for several years. While certain types of construction are projected to slow, such as in residential construction like multi-family unit buildings, other aspects of city growth are maintaining a brisk pace. Namely, the various aspects of the city’s infrastructure are still slated for upgrades and build out. The City of Denver is looking to engage several public-private partnerships to take on the task, and local construction outfits like the commercial concrete contractors Denver offers will benefit. This strategy is gaining traction in many municipalities across the US at a time when urban populations are exploding, infrastructure is in need of renovation, and government spending on such projects is limited. In general, public-private partnerships aim to bring in more stakeholders, and consequently funding, for the construction and maintenance of large public works projects such as highways, public transportation, schools, and airports.
Over the last several decades, there have been advancements in shotcrete technology and improvements in the equipment that have resulted in a material that is perfectly suited for more and more applications. While shotcrete virtually eliminates the forming process, it still offers the same structural characteristics as traditional cast-in-place walls. This means that projects using shotcrete are typically completed faster, which saves both time and money.
However to ensure you get the best finished product, you need to use a company that is experienced with the process as well as the proper equipment and skilled crews to place it. At The Conco Companies, we are proud to say we have all three – the experience, equipment and skilled nozzlemen - and our portfolio includes successfully completing a diverse range of projects using shotcrete. Common applications include shear walls, retaining walls, and architectural walls to slope pavement and soil nailing as well as sites with extreme operating environments such as hydroelectric plants along with many other uses. One project we are currently working on is providing shotcrete services for the new I-5NB HOV lane in Tacoma, WA. For this project, we are using a specialty shotcrete technique that involves carving a design on the shot-face of the retaining walls. To increase efficiency, our crews are doing all of the carving from lifts. This project is a perfect example of the cost-efficiency of shotcrete over traditional cast-in-place concrete as it is saving the project an enormous amount of both time and labor costs. On another new project in Portland, OR, Conco is providing a full range of concrete services including cost-effective shotcrete. The 14th & Glisan is a 16-story, mixed-use building. Among the scope of the job includes using shotcrete on a three-level below grade parking structure. Please visit our website for other shotcrete projects we have posted as well as those using our other services. Conco is one of the leading concrete contractors in the Western U.S. and offers a wide range of quality services and products. While we tackle projects both big and small, our experience includes providing the complete concrete package for the Levi’s Stadium along with other notable projects. We serve California, Washington State, Oregon, Colorado and Nevada. The Conco Companies initially started out as a concrete contractor but as our business expanded over the years, we have evolved into a full service provider to the construction industry. We now provide a range of “concrete solutions” to our customers as opposed to “concrete services,” and we have the resources and expertise to oversee the entire process.
The range of services we provide include rebar fabrication and installation, concrete pumping, formwork, shotcrete, cellular concrete, trucking, design/build, general contracting and turnkey solutions. By providing such a broad array of comprehensive solutions, it creates value to all those involved in the project and has given us many loyal customers. For many projects, we believe that design/build creates the best value for our client. When Conco has early input into the design process, it typically allows us to create a better finished product and at a lower cost. This is due to the fact that we have experience with multiple means and methods for constructing similar structures and understand their unique advantages and disadvantages. We also work with engineers that value our input and factor in constructability issues into their design process. Moreover given our decades in the industry, we have extensive local knowledge of the market and understand the capabilities of suppliers and costs associated with various alternatives. Another advantage to working with Conco is we are one of the few concrete contractors on the West Coast that services both concrete and rebar. This means there is no need for schedule coordination as we control the whole process, which results in less work stoppages and delays. The Conco Companies are a leading supplier of concrete services for the Western U.S and we got our start in the Bay Area in 1959. Our success has come from offering clients the best value on a wide range of concrete services and products and we are now one of the region’s top commercial concrete contractors. We serve California, Oregon, Washington Colorado, and Nevada. At The Conco Companies, our shotcrete services provide an excellent alternative to traditional cast-in-place walls. Since shotcrete is pneumatically placed, it virtually eliminates the forming process, saving time and money, while still offering the same structural characteristics as traditional concrete methods. It is used for a wide range of applications including retaining walls, shear walls, and architectural walls as well as soil nailing and slope pavement.
An example of a project that Conco provided cost-effective shotcrete solutions for was the Mark, a 48-story high-rise tower in Seattle, WA. The 528,000 sq. ft. building consists of Class A+ office space and the luxurious 189-room SLS Hotel and Spa. In addition to the 5,000 cubic yard mat foundation pour we did that required almost 500 truckloads of concrete, the project included a sub-level parking structure with shotcrete perimeter walls and a concrete elevator core. A few years ago we also served as the General Contractor on a design-build parking structure for the Brio apartment complex in Walnut Creek, CA. The project included the construction of a five-story; cast-in-place parking structure with stalls for 471 vehicles and chargers for electric vehicles. To complete the project we placed 159,028 square feet of concrete, 750,000 lbs. of reinforced steel, and 1,500 cubic yards of shotcrete. Another type of shotcrete project we worked on was the Enfrente Pathway, a 0.6-mile, multi-use trail that provided a critical link to central and south Novato. Soil nails were installed to retain the hillside and we applied sculpted shotcrete as a finish over the walls. Depending on the type of application, a shotcrete mix can be customized with additives or admixtures. For instance when silica fume is added, it reduces permeability, increases the compressive and flexural strength, and offers better resistance to alkali and chemical attacks. To improved pumpability and adhesion in wet-process shotcrete and for freeze-thaw durability, air-entraining admixtures can be added to the shotcrete. To control cracking and improve impact resistance, different fibers are used or accelerators are added to improve placement characteristics in adverse conditions or increase production capabilities. The Conco Companies’ mission is to be the best supplier of concrete services in the Western United States and to bring expertise, experience and quality to each project. We continue to upgrade and expand facilities to better serve the growing market for public works projects, commercial, parking structures, educational, and other construction development. Shotcrete is the term used to define the entire act of spraying concrete or mortar instead of pouring by hand.
What is a Shotcrete Nozzleman? A nozzleman is a person who understands the process of making and placing wet-mix shotcrete via a nozzle. Different kinds of shotcrete methods require different kinds of skills. For example, a nozzleman working with wet-mix shotcrete will be spraying a pre-mixed solution onto the surface. Gunite, on the other hand, is a dry-mix process in which the dry mix and the water are mixed on-demand from the nozzle. This process requires a highly skilled shotcrete professional with experience with this process. The Conco Companies Are Always Hiring Shotcrete Professionals Conco is one of leading commercial concrete contractors in the Western US. Shotcrete is not a material, but a technique of applying concrete at high velocities through a hose. This application method shaves time and money and is gaining popularity in the building community each day. Though shotcrete can be used on almost any concrete project, there are a number of projects where the use of shotcrete is often the best choice.
Here are five projects that are ideal for shotcrete usage: Repair and Restoration Projects Shotcrete is a fantastic method for repair and restoration projects because of its versatility and ease of application. The key is to ensure that the new concrete material is well blended with the existing material to ensure that the repair will stand up to the test of time. Pools and Water Features Water-resistant concrete is ideal for structures like pools, dams, reservoirs, and marine-based structures. Because shotcrete can be placed directly against soil, it is the ideal material for home pools. Shotcrete doesn’t rely on forms and molds, so it can be used to create very attractive shapes at an economical price. Skate Parks Like pools, shotcrete can be used to create the smooth, tall curves needed for skateboard ramps and parks. Landscaping Shotcrete can be used to create interesting architectural shapes and landscape structures like sculptures, walkways, and any project that requires flexible and durable materials. New Construction Shotcrete greatly reduces the cost of construction projects and offers designers the ability to create curved, irregular shapes that are also structurally sound. Shotcrete can save both time and money while making innovative architectural decisions feasible. Source: unionstationindenver.com/news-events/events/ Concrete is one of the most utilized man-made materials on the planet. Used for buildings, sidewalks, and infrastructure worldwide, concrete is a hearty material comprised of a mixture of aggregates (any coarse particles used in construction) and paste. Common concrete aggregates include sand and gravel and common pastes are composed of water and cement. That’s right, contrary to popular belief; cement is actually an ingredient in concrete itself.
Although the terms are often used interchangeably, concrete and cement couldn’t be more different. Concrete is the material that we know and love, whereas cement is simply a binding agent used in approximately 15% of concrete to create its signature hardness. Cement is typically composed of finely ground limestone, silica, alumina, and iron oxide. Types of Cement There are two common forms of cement: hydraulic and non-hydraulic cement. Hydraulic cement hardens when it comes into contact with water and ultimately forms a water resistant barrier. This is the kind of cement most people are familiar with. Non-hydraulic cement does not harden when in the presence of water. The most common form of cement used in concrete, Portland cement, is a form of hydraulic cement. While most forms of Portland cement are very similar, there are varieties of cement which can be used for specific construction needs:

We continue to upgrade and expand facilities to better serve the growing market for public works projects, commercial, parking structures, educational, and other construction development. We serve California, Washington State, Oregon, Colorado and Nevada. Since June 2016, The Conco Companies have been supplying concrete services for The Mark at 5th & Columbia project. As a reminder, the project consists of a 528,000 sqft office space, hotel, and spa scheduled to be completed by April 2017. The building boasts a number of green building features and hopes to seek LEED Gold certification. The initial concrete mat foundation pour, completed in June 2015, required 500 truckloads of concrete alone.
The project is progressing beautifully. As of August 2016, the concrete core stood at its final height (48 stories) and the focus shifted to completing the remaining concrete pours for the structural decks and garages. Remaining concrete pours for the month of August commenced at a pace of 2 per week until Level 28 was reached. Structural steel was installed in August and roof steel was installed shortly after, bringing an end to the steel erection process. The project really ramped up in September when concrete pours were increased from 2 per week to 3 per week with the goal of completing all concrete decks up to level 4. This pace continued through October until level 45 concrete cement decks had been successfully poured. Parts of the garage, which have been poured, are being polished with final paint and signage. The next major project milestones include the rooftop mechanical and structural assemblies, podium construction for levels 1 through 5, mid and high-rise elevators, and the removal of cranes as the project moves onward.
