Downtown San Jose is booming and is looking forward to several new development projects. The city has seen more large tech companies move into its downtown area, and anticipates there are even more to come. Along with the commercial sector growth, the city is also looking to boost its housing stock and is working to grow the number of residential units available to the city’s residents. All the new development and construction has meant the people in the construction industry are being kept busy, from architects and engineers to San Jose commercial concrete contractors. Two projects in particular are in the works that should bring new opportunities to area construction professionals: a mega office campus in downtown San Jose and eleven affordable housing developments spread across the city. Downtown office campus
The real estate development company Boston Properties has submitted a proposal to build a massive San Jose office campus that could host up to 9,000 employees in its potential 1.8 million square feet of office space. The new building would be located downtown at South Almaden Boulevard between Woz Way and San Carlos Street, along the banks of the Guadalupe River. As it is outlined in the proposal, the campus could be 17 to 18 stories high and feature a modern design and amenities suitable for the tech giants it is courting, including Google, Apple, and Facebook. The campus will boast large, open floors with natural light from the glass-surfaced exteriors, as well as the potential for ground-floor retail and restaurant spaces. Affordable housing developments Like many other growing cities, San Jose has found itself with more and more residents and a housing supply that is struggling to keep pace. In an effort to provide more housing options for all of its citizens, the city has dedicated almost $100 million to several affordable housing developments that are planned to begin construction in the next several years. San Jose’s mayor, Sam Liccardo, anticipates the 11 housing developments will bring the city closer to its goal of adding 10,000 new affordable residential units to San Jose by 2022. Spread out across the city from downtown to east San Jose and in the southern section, the affordable housing complexes will introduce 1,144 apartments into the housing stock and offer homes to the city’s most vulnerable residents, including low-income seniors and people who have experienced homelessness. The project is still pending approval from City Council, and if passed would offer several year’s worth of work for area construction companies with including residential development residential development concrete contractors in San Jose.
