If your siding doesn’t look as attractive as you’d like, you can improve it indirectly by tweaking your home’s complementary features, or directly by repainting or replacing it. Certain improvements will cost more than others, so take some time to consider how much time and money you’re willing to spend. The biggest improvements will need the help of siding contractors and possibly professional painters, but the smallest ones can be done on your own. 1. Add Greenery You can improve your siding’s appearance by framing it with lush greenery and turning your siding—and home—into a centerpiece. On its own, your siding can appear one-dimensional and bland. More so if your home doesn’t have a second body of siding, or if your home is too small for additional siding styles. To add dimension to your siding, you can look into simple gardening patterns such as lining the front of your home with bushes, hanging planters on your porch, and lining your lawn with colorful rose bushes. An important thing to remember is that climbing plants are dangerous to siding. Though they can add a free-growing elegance to your home, climbing plants such as ivy can pull your siding apart, making it crack or fracture, and exposing your home not only to the elements, but to pests and animals. With this in mind, you should always keep your greenery away from direct contact with your siding. 2. Apply Window Treatments Another way to improve your siding’s look is by dressing up your windows. Window treatments can act as embellishments on otherwise plain siding. The easiest way to make-up your windows is by switching up your curtains or drapes with designs that are visible from the outside. You could also install wooden blinds to add a touch of nature, which can look striking against a single-toned siding. On the outside, you could update your window frames and grids to complement your siding. If your siding is white, a dark frame can add dimension through contrast. And if your siding is dark, a lighter frame can add visual pop. You could also add planter boxes underneath your window for a touch of natural color, but remember to maintain the plants so they don’t grow into your siding.
3. Repaint Your Siding A more dramatic improvement would be repainting your siding. You could hire a professional painter to touch up your siding’s color, or you could spend a day or so yourself with a DIY project. If you take on the paint job yourself, don’t skip over your research on proper painting methods. Wood siding will need to be stripped of old paint, and vinyl siding has a stronger tendency to warp when it’s painted a dark color. 4. Replace with a New Style Starting from scratch gives you the best options to improve the look of your siding. If your siding is reaching the end of its lifespan, or if you’re ready to give your home a complete makeover, you can hire siding contractors to install a new style. You can use the same siding materials in a different color, use different siding materials in the same color, or use completely different siding. Siding contractors can suggest certain combinations of materials and colors in relation to your house style and location. It could turn out that your current siding materials aren’t the right fit for your location’s climate, or that your house style works better with certain colors. For example, if your house’s style is craftsman and it’s in the Bay Area, siding contractors might recommend fiber cement siding with earthy colors, to both withstand the Mediterranean climate and match the traditional color palette of craftsman houses. However you choose to improve your siding, research before acting You might be able to afford mistakes with your curtains (picking the wrong color/pattern), but improvements that require more effort (repainting/replacing siding) will require far more time and money to remedy mistakes. Remember to do your research, and reach out to professionals who can get your improvements done right the first time. Comments are closed.
