The Conco Companies’ range of concrete services for commercial, educational, industrial, healthcare, public work projects and parking structures is vast. Our services are well-known and trusted throughout the Western United States and we have a reputation for consistently meeting deadlines and staying on budget. Many of our projects have lasting effects the surrounding communities such as when we assisted with a permanent fix to the Bay Bridge and worked on the expansion to the Mineta Airport.
The problem on the Bay Bridge was discovered when faulty anchor rods that secured the earthquake shock absorbers, known as shear keys, to the deck of the bridge snapped when tightened. The 32 defective rods had secured the steel bridge deck that framed the concrete crossbeam support at the east end of the E2 pier. As the failed rods were embedded in concrete and inaccessible, replacement was impossible. The solution involved a complex series of steel saddles and post-tensioned jacket walls used to provide the required clamping force required to secure the bridge deck framing to the E2 crossbeam. Another significant project for Conco was to assist on the expansion and remodeling of the Mineta Airport in San Jose, CA. Fueled by the fast job growth in nearby Silicon Valley, the Mineta Airport was not large enough to serve the community. Our involvement in the 10-year plan was to help construct Terminal B, the largest phase of the project. Now considered to be one of the most technologically advanced airports in the country, the project received LEED Silver certification for environmentally sustainable design and construction. The airport’s website states that the design optimizes an “energy performance exceeding California Title 24 standards by 16%.” The Conco Companies are the foremost supplier of concrete services for the Western U.S. We have built a reputation on superior concrete formwork, reinforcing, place and finish, shotcrete and other ancillary services that benefit from our vast experience. We serve California, Washington State, Oregon, Colorado and Nevada.

The Conco Companies have been delivering expert concrete services for commercial, educational, entertainment, healthcare, public works, and parking projects as well as for industrial projects. Our portfolio contains several large industrial projects throughout the West Coast such as the United Spiral Pipe LLC (USP) plant, the Inland Empire Energy Center, and the former Solyndra facilities.
Completed in 2010, United Spiral Pipe (USP) is a state-of-the-art spiral welded pipe manufacturing plant in Pittsburg, CA. The enormous rectangular shaped building is 35 ft. tall, more than six city blocks long, and approximately a block and a half wide. As a joint venture of United States Steel Corporation and two South Korean firms, the steelmaker Posco and SeAH, a spiral steel pipe manufacturer, the plant cost more than $130 million to construct. The architect and engineer on the project was the Continental Design And Management Group. According to the USP website, the plant has world-class pipe making and coating capabilities and can produce 300,000 net tons of API specification line pipe per year in outside diameters ranging from 24 inches to 64 inches. The massive steel pipes are used to transport oil and natural gas for the expanding North America pipe market. Constructed to LEED standards, it exceeds California’s Title 24 lighting requirements and is one of the most advanced and efficient spiral pipe mills in North America to-date. The Inland Empire Energy Center was constructed in response to the quickly growing, under-serviced energy market in Southern California. The new energy plant was built by the General Electric Company and managing partner, the Calpine Corporation. Located on 46 acres in Romoland, CA. in Riverside County, the plant came online in 2008. The large 800MW, natural gas-fired plant is capable of meeting the energy demands of almost 600,000 households in the area. We invite you to take a look other Conco projects featured on our website. The Conco Companies are one of the foremost suppliers of concrete services for the Western U.S. We got our start in 1959 in the Bay Area by offering clients the best value on a broad range of concrete services and products. Since that time, we have taken a leading role as top concrete contractors in the region. We have four regional offices serving California, Oregon, Nevada, Colorado and Washington. The Conco Companies expertly provide premium concrete services for a range of commercial, industrial, educational, healthcare and public works projects as well as parking structures. Many of our commercial projects include mixed-use buildings such as the Kinects Tower under construction in the Denny Triangle area of Seattle and the Main Street Gateway in Bellevue, WA.
For the Main Street Gateway, we are providing a complete turn-key structural concrete package. Conco’s responsibilities include concrete pumping, place and finish, shotcrete, and formwork along with supplying the reinforcement for the mixed-use building located in downtown Bellevue. The structural slabs were poured in early July and Cadman Inc. supplied all of the ready-mix for us. The reinforcing was installed by RPM. Scheduled for completion in the summer of 2016, the building will have approximately 350 residential units and the related community spaces. At the street level, there will be approximately 25,600 sq. ft. of retail space and restaurant space. The project includes underground parking for about 600 vehicles and will have several electric vehicle charging stalls. In addition there will be secure bicycle storage slots. For the Kinects Tower, a new mixed-use 41-story high-rise, Conco is constructing four levels of below grade parking and five levels above to provide the building with 316 parking stalls. We recently completed the 16 hours, 6,000 cubic yard continuous mat pour that is reinforced with 850,000 pounds of rebar. The total project requires Conco placing 30,470 cubic yards of concrete, 3,106 tons of rebar and 671,500 l. ft. of PT cable. As a side note, Conco received positive feedback from Seattle’s DOT for the Kinects Tower. They applauded our efforts for the mat pour and called it the best-coordinated and smoothest job they can remember. Currently, one of The Conco Companies’ large construction projects is the Salesforce Tower, which is slated to become San Francisco’s tallest building at 1070 feet high once it is finished in 2017. For the project, we recently undertook the massive, continuous mat pour for the skyscraper that was over 18 hours from start to finish.
The new 14-foot thick and nearly an acre in size concrete slab required approximately 12,000 cubic yards of concrete, which is enough to nearly fill four Olympic size swimming pools. The pour started at midnight on November 7th and utilized seven pumping trucks throughout the course of the job that had boom spans of 150 feet to 190 feet. The pumping trucks were constantly re-filled from 1,300 truckloads of concrete that came from several cement plants located around the Bay Area. In order to create that much concrete, the cement plants needed 7,900,000 pounds of cement and 9,000 cubic yards of sand and gravel as well as 54,000 gallons of water. In total the pour used almost 49 million pounds of concrete. To get the ground prepared for the gigantic pour, crews had constructed a subterranean lattice that consisted of 5 million pounds of number 18 rebar that was 12 layers high. Six inches separated each layer. Number 18 rebar is the largest size available and each piece is 2.25” in diameter. At 45-feet long, it required eight steel workers to lift a piece into place. Along with the 14-foot thick slab, engineers designed another step in an effort to provide the upmost earthquake protection for the building in the active seismic zone. Part of the foundation also includes 42 piles that go all the way down into the bedrock, which is 300 feet below street level. Source: wired.com/2015/11/it-took-18-hours-to-pour-san-franciscos-biggest-ever-concrete-foundation/#slide-1 Even though ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has been commercially available in the U.S. since 2000 it was primarily studied by industry researchers and organizations such as the Federal Highway Administration. The FHA’s research involved the study of UHPC in highway infrastructure as well as the viability of using it for bridge applications such as precast, prestressed girders and precast waffle panels for bridge decks. They also looked at using it as a jointing material between precast concrete deck panels and girders and between the flanges of adjacent girders. Now Buchanan County, Iowa has just opened a new bridge that was constructed with a new UHPC that was developed in South Korea. To build the 52-foot long Hawkeye UHPC Bridge, the Buchanan County Secondary Roads Department used the UPHC mix containing short strands of steel that engineers say makes it up to eight times stronger than traditional mixes. The steel used in the UHPC is a waste product from the tire manufacturing industry. According to Byung-Suk Kim, an engineer with the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, he states that, “structures like the new bridge may endure for 200 years, and is almost maintenance-free.” In contrast, a bridge constructed with a traditional concrete mix typically lasts about 50 years and need repairs as soon as 15 to 20 years. Brent Phares, director of the Bridge Engineering Center at Iowa State University, says that the reason the UPHC is so durable is that the new concrete mix is dense and fluids are not able to penetrate the surface. Thereby, it will not deteriorate like traditional concrete structures. One caveat that Brian Keirleber, an engineer with Buchanan County, noted was that the project involved a steep learning curve due to the new technology. Furthermore, our many years in the industry have given us an opportunity to develop relationships with area suppliers and knowledge of local markets to enable us to offer you the best value. The Conco Companies are the foremost supplier of concrete services for the Western U.S. Our services include commercial, educational, parking and other construction development along with public works projects. Our four regional offices serve California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada. The Conco Companies vast portfolio of projects includes commercial, industrial, educational, healthcare and entertainment venues. We also have extensive experience with providing concrete services for municipal, state and federal buildings.
One such project is our involvement in the construction of the new U.S. Federal Courthouse in Downtown Los Angeles. Breaking ground in 2013, the $400 million project will be one of the safest buildings in the country in terms of withstanding the threat of earthquakes or a bomb attack. Commonly referred to as the “Cube” for its unique shape, the cubic volume of the building appears to “float” over the stone base. Since the courthouse is being constructed in an earthquake zone, seismic design was an important component of the structural engineering process. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP (SOM) designed and engineered a state-of-the-art roof truss system to control lateral drifts. The 630,000 GSF building is scheduled to be complete by 2016 and has already earned the Green Good Design award for Green Architecture in 2014. We also had the honor to provide concrete services for an American Institute of Architects (AIA) award winning building, the Caltrans District 7 Headquarters Replacement Building in L.A. The project was designed by Thom Mayne of Morphosis Architects, Inc., who was the 2005 Laureate of the prestigious Pritzker Prize. The Caltrans District 7 Headquarters building is thought to be one of his best works and the futuristic, 13-story building is often included on lists of prominent architectural sites to visit. The initial concept for the new Caltrans building began in 2000 when the State sought designs for a building that would incorporate “world-class design excellence, sustainability, integration of art and architecture, and contribute to the revitalization of the civic center.” The 716,200 sq. ft. building also has an underground parking structure that accommodates 1,142 vehicles. Clark Construction served as the general contractor on the project and John A. Martin & Associates, Inc. was the engineer. Since that time, we have taken a leading role as one of the top concrete contractors in the region. Our offices serve California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Nevada. At The Conco Companies, we have extensive experience working on projects in commercial, healthcare, industrial, and parking as well as public works. In the industry since 1959, we also provide concrete services for projects at educational institutions. While some of these projects may not be our largest or most renowned, we are proud of our continued commitment to provide exemplary concrete services to enhance and benefit our communities.
One of the projects we undertook several years ago was for the new state-of-the-art University of California, Berkeley - Davis Hall that houses their science and research facilities. The project’s contractor was Hathaway-Dinwiddie, the architect was the Smith Group, Inc., and the engineer was Forell/Elsesser Engineers. The expanded building now includes the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department as well as the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS). Approximately 185,000 sq. ft. large, the new facility cost $18 million to construct. Another example of Conco’s commitment to educational projects is the new Riverside Continuation High School. The prior structure had been in a deteriorated state when the decision was made to totally replace the structure with a new 34,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility. The contractor on the project was Broward Builders, Inc. and the architect was California Design West. Conco provided concrete services for the project, which was on an extremely tight timeline due to the need to be done for the 2012 school year. Completed in slightly less than a year from groundbreaking, the construction team worked diligently to stay on budget and meet deadlines. A recent trend in educational projects is to construct buildings as “green” as possible and to utilize sustainable practices that will save energy (and money) in future operational costs. One such project we were a part of was the award winning 2,670-bed Poly Canyon Village at Cal Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The large project was built on a 30 acre site and included nine residential buildings, two parking structures with 1,926 spaces, retail stores, a swimming pool, study rooms, and administrative student support services. The Conco Companies are a leading supplier of concrete services for the Western United States. We have built a reputation on superior concrete formwork, reinforcing, place and finish, shotcrete and other ancillary services that benefit from our vast experience. We have four regional offices to serve Southern and Northern California, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. At The Conco Companies, we have been involved in a wide range of projects throughout our decades in the industry. We have provided concrete services for a variety of projects in healthcare, education, industry, and residential, as well as entertainment and public works. In addition we have extensive experience constructing parking structures and have served as the G.C. on many of our projects.
Recently we were awarded the concrete package for the parking structure for the new hospital building under construction on the Stanford Hospital Campus in Palo Alto, CA. Conco’s scope of work involves constructing 2 levels below grade, 1 level at grade and 2 levels above grade and will be approximately 397,359 square feet when complete. The project will require 4.2 million pounds of reinforcing steel and use 17,000 cubic yards of concrete. In addition we are using 1,200 cubic yards of shotcrete. The parking structure will add approximately 913 new parking spaces for the campus. Furthermore, The Conco Companies served as the General Contractor on a design-build parking structure for the new Brio apartment complex in Walnut Creek, CA. Located on 5-acres, the developer and builder for the 300-unit apartment complex is SummerHill Homes. As G.C., we constructed a five-story; cast-in-place parking structure with stalls for 471 vehicles and chargers for electric vehicles. We placed 159,028 square feet of concrete and used 750,000 lbs. of reinforced steel along with 5,000 cubic yards of concrete and 1,500 cubic yards of shotcrete. Several years ago we also had the privilege to be involved with the construction of the parking structure for the renowned Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, CA. The Nokia Theater is part of L.A. Live, which is a complex of retail, entertainment, and sports development that help contribute to the revival of L.A.’s downtown area. The two-story below-grade parking garage provided the structural support for the complex and earned the Excellence in Concrete Award from the American Concrete Institute - Southern California Chapter. Contact us to see how we can assist you with your next project. At The Conco Companies, we are one of the leading concrete contractors in the Western U.S. and offer a wide range of quality services and products. Our experience includes providing services for commercial, educational, parking and other construction development as well as public works projects. We serve California, Washington State, Oregon, Colorado and Nevada. The Conco Companies have been in business for almost 60 years and during that time we have had the opportunity to provide concrete services for all types of commercial, educational, healthcare and public works projects as well as parking structures. A few of the larger healthcare projects we have been involved with over the last several years include the John Muir Medical Center, the VA Mental Health & Research Facility in Seattle, and Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco.
The 400,000 square-foot Phase IV Expansion and Remodeling Project at John Muir Medical Center at the Walnut Creek Campus added a new, five-story tower, underground loading dock and a Central Utility Plant. The new tower is a steel-braced frame with concrete slab over metal deck. In the main lobby, there is a cast in place concrete water feature rotunda. The project also included several gardens with architectural concrete at various roof levels. At the new VA Mental Health & Research (MH&R) building under construction in Seattle, WA, Conco is providing all of the concrete pumping, formwork and place and finish services as well as the reinforcement. Since the project is on an extremely tight timeline, our unique ability to supply both the rebar and formwork eliminates the need for coordination between several different suppliers and enables the work to move forward in an organized manner. Conco’s shotcrete services will be used for nonstructural site walls. Another one of Conco’s projects was the Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco that is one of the country’s largest skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities serving seniors and adults with disabilities. The 150-year old facility was expanded and extensively renovated over a 10-year plan that entailed 500,000 sq. ft. of new construction and 150,000 sq. ft. of renovations. Care was taken to remain true to the historical components of the origin hospital and retain the natural environment of the 62-acre campus.
